Revolutionizing the Unmoderated Research Experience

Helping GT students manage educational resources across classes.

My Role

UX Researcher | User Testing

Timeline

Aug 2022 - Dec 2022

OVERVIEW

What we did:

Partnered with UX Research company Sprig. Innovated design solution to increase the depth of information researchers gain using Sprig's unmoderated research tools.

Why we did it:

Unmoderated research is affordable and scalable, however, researchers often struggle to gain deep personal insights and individual user narratives without the commitment of in-person moderated research. We aimed to:

Help researchers working at mid-sized enterprises to use unmoderated research methods to gain deeper user insights.

How we did it:

Exploratory Research:
-
stakeholder research
- surveys
- semi-structured interviews

Understanding the User:
- personas
- storyboards
- journey mapping

Ideation:
- brainstorming
- design ideas pitch to Sprig

Design:
- Figma
- AI simulation

User Testing:
-
Wizard of Oz testing
- observations
- user interviews

Evaluation:
- presentation of findings to Sprig

PROBLEM

Industry Partner

Sprig provides online research tools to mid-sized corporations conducting UX research. Services include:

  • Usability testing
  • Survey creation
  • Interviewee recruitment

The Problem Space

“Helping researchers working at mid-sized enterprises to use unmoderated research methods to gain deeper user insights.”

DISCOVERY

The Process

We reached out to researchers using UX Research Slack Channels to explore the UX Research experience and identify pain points.

We used:

  • Surveys
  • 1 Exploratory Survey (more open-ended questions)
  • 1 Targeted Survey (used exploratory findings to construct structured multiple choice Q's)
  • Stakeholder meeting with Sprig
  • Semi-structured interviews with current or prospective Sprig users

What did we Discover?

  • Human-to-human interactions build rapport, reach discrete populations, and give unparalleled qualitative insights.
  • Unmoderated research tools are cheap and scale large, but don’t offer attitudinal, behavioral, or non-verbal insights.
  • Probing is highly valuable as probing allows question adaptation or iteration.

SYNTHESIS

Affinity Mapping

Using survey and interview data, my team created an affinity map to visualize and organize our data.

Our Research Showed:

Unmoderated research is...

  • Cheap
  • Scalable
  • Fast
  • Metric- & Data-Focused
  • Lacks depth & Individualization

Moderated research is...

  • Observable
  • Captures Individual Attitudes & Behaviors
  • Allows for Probing
  • Time- & Resource-Consuming
  • Expensive

DESIGN

The high fidelity prototype of my team's design was created in Figma. The interactive design is accessible at the link below:

Developing a Visual Design Language

Whenever possible, we ensure the default state of our platform is high contrast and color-blind-accessible. Ideally, as many users as possible can interact with our platform without having to take extra steps to ensure accessibility.

USER TESTING

User Testing

During user testing, I developed a semi-structured interview protocol, and a task analysis. I led my team's user testing sessions. Our user testing findings were used to iterate our design.

EVALUATION

Strengths of Design

  • The design should accommodate users with no prior experience using LMS systems.
  • The design should be aesthetically minimal and not make the users feel overwhelmed.
  • The design should feel fun to use.

Need for Improvement

  • The design should accommodate users with no prior experience using LMS systems.
  • The design should be aesthetically minimal and not make the users feel overwhelmed.
  • The design should feel fun to use.
